Botanical Garden and Arboretum
Botanical Gardens and Arboretum belongs to Mendel University in Brno. The Garden was established by Prof. ing. A. Bayer in 1938 as a 2 hectar area. Present 11 hectars garden is dated since 1967. Whole area is composed of fifth main parts. Well known is our orchid collection with more than 1 500 natural species and 3 000 hybrids seasoned with 200 species of the genus Tillandsia. You can also find 500 alpine plants, 2 000 perennials and 4 000 woody plants in the outdoor area. At the end of May flower every year more than 300 Iris cultivars. Garden is situated 220-250 m above sea level in the region with average annual rainfall 547 mm and average annual temperature 8,4 °C. Soil is mostly clayish with high CaO content, part of the garden is man-made backfill created after clay mining.
